Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no basis for a charge against this man” (Luke 23:4).
Before a lamb could be offered for sins, it had to be inspected. It had to be without blemish of any kind—no blind, lame or diseased animals would make an acceptable sacrifice (Exodus 12:5). This pointed forward to Christ and His sinless perfection.
Amazingly, that Friday morning, as the priests in the temple begin inspecting the lambs brought for sacrifice, Jesus stands before Pilate for His inspection. You see, Jesus is the true Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, but in order to be an acceptable sacrifice, He must be free of any sin of His own. So the true Lamb is inspected, not by priests, but by the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate. Pilate concludes three times (!) that Jesus is innocent of any wrongdoing! He is truly the Lamb without blemish.
